Robyn Fenty, infectiously known as 'Rihanna', is no stranger to the words that headlines her 2016 hit song, Work. It is also a personal aphorism that has led her to make monumental moves as a singer, philanthropist, and essentially an entrepreneur.
Initially introduced to the world as a song bird, the 31-year-old Grammy award-winning artist is hitting high notes on the entrepreneur stage as well. Last spring, the Barbados native announced her plans to unveil another massive business project, a luxury fashion house. She collaborated with Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton (LUVMH) to debut the fashion house. LVMH is the parent company of Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, and the launch of this new business venture positions her to become the first black woman to head a fashion house.
Everyone is mesmerized by her voice and captivated by her lyrics, but what’s more impressive is her drive, heart to give, and savvy business skills. A lucrative music career is a big deal for almost any artist, but Rihanna is creating more than just music. She’s creating a path to demonstrate what’s possible if you prepare a plan and execute it diligently. Simply put, she’s making CEO moves on and off the stage.
From music artist to CEO to philanthropist
In 2006, Rihanna founded the Believe Foundation, which was established to support children living with terminal illness; and, a year later, she became associated with the Cartier Love Charity Bracelet Ambassadors to bring awareness to HIV. Rihanna also heads the Clara Lionel Foundation, a fundraising outlet that has funded initiatives such as the Children’s Orthopedic Center.
Rihanna’s charitable spirit and heart to help led her to organize and collaborate in these initiatives where her efforts would not go unnoticed. In 2017, the Harvard Foundation of Harvard University awarded her Humanitarian of the Year award.
Music, fashion and beauty
What does Rihanna do when she’s not making music? The list is one that could possibly be growing as you read this, but as of late, this amazing woman is weaving her dreams as she lives them out loud. Over the past five years, she has released a best-selling album; was named the creative director for the Puma women’s sportswear collection; launched her iconic Fenty Beauty line; and as recently shown during New York Fashion Week, developed a unique line of lingerie that is both gender and size inclusive.
Strategy and patience is key
One of the most notable traits of Rihanna’s business style is her passion for patience. She carefully assesses the market and ensures that her product launch exceeds the standards before introducing it to the world. She was in the lab with her Fenty beauty line for three years before introducing the brand in 2017, and followed the same passionate mindset with her fashion line. Prior to its launch, she made multiple statements that her fashion brand would be set apart from other lines, such as Givenchy and Dior. Her fashion venture is one that presents primarily on E-commerce, pop-up shops, and fashion shows that are exclusive to her line.
Being mindful of her consumers
Models of all shades, shapes, and sizes grace the stage at Rihanna’s fashion shows, presenting a racially diverse group of models wearing functional apparel with an intimate, yet resonating appeal. Clearly, as an entrepreneur, she thinks outside of the box. Her fashion line is exclusively supported by direct-to-consumer online sales. What?!!! Does this mean that you can’t walk into a brick and mortar store and shop her latest designs? Well, yes and no. You may not be able to walk into a store and shop the structured silhouettes, but you can definitely expect new designs to drop at any time and almost every few weeks; a move that is afforded by her decision to launch the brand with a consumer-online sales initiative. This is a major move by the entrepreneur that is sure to produce generous returns as many consumers now shop online before visiting stores.
Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty brand and fashion lines give a voice to the multidimensional woman of today. It’s a force that continuously unfolds, which can ultimately lead to much more for her as an entrepreneur. The inclination and ubiquity of all her endeavors endure because she allows nothing to interfere with her initiative, nor does she press pause on her passion. The only force capable of stopping Rihanna from doing more is Robyn Fenty, the go-getting entrepreneur.
